Activists will be marching to the Bella Center where U.N. climate negotiations are taking place. Their message? People want a real climate deal.

El 16 de Diciembre, al comienzo de la fase ministerial de alto nivel de la cumbre de Copenhague, nosotros, los movimientos por la justicia climática, tomaremos la conferencia durante un día y la trasformaremos en una Asamblea Popular.

Nuestro objetivo es interrumpir las sesiones y abrir un espacio abierto dentro de la zona de la ONU para celebrar la asamblea. La asamblea dará voz a aquellos que no son escuchados, será una oportunidad para cambiar la agenda, para debatir las verdaderas soluciones, para mandar un mensaje claro para el Mundo que pide justicia climática.

Habrá un punto de partida legalizado, que será anunciado a los medios y a la policía. Desde ahí, el bloque por la Justicia Climática avanzara hacia el Bella Center. Varios grupos se aproximaran a las barreras del área de conferencias desde varias direcciones. El objetivo es que todos los grupos que vengan desde fuera comiencen a entrar en la zona de la ONU a las 10:00 horas. Al mismo tiempo, los grupos que estén dentro de la Cumbre comenzaran a interrumpir las sesiones y movilizarán a la gente para que deje las negociaciones y participen en la Asamblea Popular. La Asamblea comenzara a las 12 de la mañana en la entrada principal del Bella Center dentro de la zona de la ONU.

¡Reclamar el Poder! Es una acción de masas beligerante no violenta de desobediencia civil. Sobrepasaremos todas las barreras físicas que se antepongan en nuestro camino- pero no responderemos con violencia si la policía intenta escalar la situación, no crearemos situaciones de inseguridad, ¡estaremos allí para que se oigan nuestras voces!

La Asamblea Popular, al contrario de las soluciones falsas que se están negociando, destacarán las alternativas que nos den unas soluciones reales y justas: dejar los combustibles fósiles bajo tierra, dar el control de la producción a los pueblos y comunidades, relocalizar la producción de alimentos, reducir masivamente el consumo excesivo, especialmente en los países del Norte, reconocer la deuda ecológica y climática que tenemos con los pueblos del Sur, reparando dichas deudas, respetar los derechos de los pueblos indígenas y de los bosques.

Después de 15 años de negociaciones y sin soluciones reales a la crisis climática, decimos ¡basta!, no mas soluciones basadas en el mercado, no a la avaricia de las corporaciones y a las políticas a corto plazo decidiendo sobre nuestro futuro! No al colonialismo y las apropiaciones de tierras de las comunidades indígenas!

En Diciembre, nosotros, provenientes de diferentes culturas y movimientos, experiencias y luchas, nos uniremos. Nosotros somos indígenas, agricultores, trabajadores, ambientalistas, feministas y anticapitalistas.

Ahora nuestras distintas luchas en busca de la justicia social y ecológica encontramos un terreno común en la lucha por la justicia climática y en el deseo de reclamar el poder sobre nuestro futuro.

Reclaim Power Action Begins inside Copenhagen Climate Talks

A crowd of youth, activists, indigenous peoples, and perhaps some delegates, burst in chants of “Climate Justice Now!” and “Reclaim Power!” in the middle of the Bella Center where the Copenhagen Climate Talks are being held. Instantly surrounded by cameras and media, the group began a march out of the center towards the gates of the building where as many as 10,000 people are planning to meet them in what organizers are calling the Reclaim Power action.

The BBC is reporting that hundreds of people have already been arrested this morning as thousands more march on the Bella Center. It will be a challenge for them to get very close to the negotiations. As Adrian Wilson reports, security is tight around the  conference venue with chain link fences, concrete walls, and hundreds of police and what looked like Danish military blocking the roadways – someone with me in line this morning reported seeing a water cannon going by.

The action may receive a good deal of sympathy from even the most mainstream civil society groups here at the talks. The UN has severely restricted the number of NGO representatives able to access the negotiations over the next few days. Yesterday, NGOs were allocated the “secondary badges” now necessary for entry for only about 20% of their participants. Tomorrow, the UN will only allow 1,000 civil society representatives into the talks. On Friday, only 90 were going to be allowed in, but representatives from the Climate Action Network and others argued security back up to 500.

“The surgical removal of non governmental organizations underscores the lack of democracy inherent in these negotiations.” said Professor Micheal Dorsey, a member of the Climate Justice Now! Network. “The United Nations process has systematically failed the world’s marginalized countries and consistently excludes those that would dare support and fight on behalf of those countries. The only way to avoid catastrophic climate change is fully supporting and including peoples movements like the very ones illegitimately removed from this process.”

“Today we are seeing thousands of people joining together to fight for climate justice,” said Natalie Swift, a spokeperson with Climate Justice Action. “We need systems change to create a world which is truly just and sustainable and solve the climate crisis.”
