At least fourteen people have been killed and nearly sixty wounded in a string of attacks in Baghdad on the first day of voting in Iraq’s parliamentary elections. Iraq opened its polls on Thursday for early voting, including for hundreds of thousands of soldiers, police officers and prisoners. We speak to Nir Rosen, an independent journalist who has covered the Iraq war since 2003.

Tens of thousands of Greek workers have taken to the streets to protest the first of a series of budget cuts. The cuts come as the European Union pressures the Greek government to slash its massive budget deficit, or face potential bankruptcy. We spoke to Nikos Nikiasis of the Greek Social Forum, who put forward another option for raising the needed funds, while questioning the importance of being part of the European Union.

An Israeli court will soon decide on the demolition order of Khan al-Ahmar – a Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank – so that Israeli homes can be built in its place.

Regavim, a rightist settler group, is lobbying for the move, which would make about about 100 families homeless.

Israeli authorities have already given orders to knock down a school and many shacks in the village.

Al Jazeera’s Jacky Rowland reports from Khan al-Ahmar, one of the many Palestinian communities under threat.

The Afghan government says at least thirty-three civilians have died in a NATO air strike in the southern Afghan province of Uruzgan. The Afghanistan Council of Ministers strongly condemned the air strike, saying it was “unjustifiable.” The dead included four women and one child. The incident was not part of Operation Moshtarak, the major offensive to combat the Taliban near the town of Marjah. Over the past ten days, another nineteen Afghan civilians have been killed in Marjah. Gen. David Petraeus, who oversees the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, said that Marjah was the opening salvo in a campaign to turn back the Taliban.

Madres de Soacha se niegan a ser utilizadas por el Presidente Uribe para las campañas de reelección.

Desde hace dos años pidieron ser escuchadas, pero sólo hasta ahora el presidente las recibe, ahora en plenas elecciones y ad portas del pronunciamiento de la corte sobre la reelección. Las madres esperan respuestas y el país espera que cese la impunidad.
