The Israeli government, its brutal war crimes in Gaza exposed in detail in the U.N. report by Justice Richard Goldstone, has implemented a series of draconian measures to silence and discredit dissidents, leading intellectuals and human rights organizations inside and outside Israel that are accused-often falsely-of assisting Goldstone’s U.N. investigators. The government of Benjamin Netanyahu is attempting to shut down Israel’s premier human rights organizations, including B’Tselem, the New Israel Fund (NIF) and the Association for Civil Rights in Israel. It is busy expelling or excluding peace activists and foreign nationals from the Palestinian territories. SILWAN, EAST JERUSALEM, Mar 16, 2010 (IPS) – Three thousand heavily armed Israeli security service forces locked down large parts of the Old City of Jerusalem on Tuesday, as battalions of police fired rounds of tear gas and rubber-coated steel bullets at Palestinian protesters in the occupied eastern part of the city. Nearly 40 Palestinians were wounded and treated at nearby hospitals, as 25 were arrested during intense clashes.

Protests were aimed at the Netanyahu administration’s announcement of expanded illegal settlement construction in East Jerusalem and the five-day closure of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and Palestinian institutions within the Old City. Fundamentalist settler groups held an opening ceremony for a synagogue constructed against the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, which was seen as a provocation to the Palestinian community in the area. Actualmente, participa como abogada de las víctimas en el proceso que se sigue ante la Suprema Corte de Justicia contra el ex Director del Departamento Administrativo de Seguidad, organismo de “inteligencia” que en Colombia depende directamente de las órdenes del presidente de la República, y del que se ha descubierto que perseguía, amenazaba y facilitaba listas de víctimas a los grupos paramilitares, con quienes se están probando los nexos.

Ever since Barack Obama lifted his right hand and took his oath of office, pledging to serve the United States as its 44th president, ordinary people and their leaders around the globe have been celebrating our nation’s “triumph over race.”  Obama’s election has been touted as the final nail in the coffin of Jim Crow, the bookend placed on the history of racial caste in America.

Obama’s mere presence in the Oval Office is offered as proof that “the land of the free” has finally made good on its promise of equality.  There’s an implicit yet undeniable message embedded in his appearance on the world stage: this is what freedom looks like; this is what democracy can do for you.  If you are poor, marginalized, or relegated to an inferior caste, there is hope for you.  Trust us.  Trust our rules, laws, customs, and wars.  You, too, can get to the promised land.

Perhaps greater lies have been told in the past century, but they can be counted on one hand.  Racial caste is alive and well in America.

Most people don’t like it when I say this.  It makes them angry.  In the “era of colorblindness” there’s a nearly fanatical desire to cling to the myth that we as a nation have “moved beyond” race.  Here are a few facts that run counter to that triumphant racial narrative: Read the full story

Democracy in the United States is experiencing both a crisis of meaning and a legitimation crisis. As the promise of an aspiring democracy is sacrificed more and more to corporate and military interests, democratic spheres have largely been commercialized and democratic practices have been reduced to market relations, stripped of their worth and subject to the narrow logics of commodification and profit making. Empowerment has little to do with providing people with the knowledge, skills, and power to shape the forces and institutions that bear down on their lives and is now largely defined as under the rubric of being a savvy consumer. When not equated with the free market capitalism, democracy is reduced to the empty rituals of elections largely shaped by corporate money and indifferent to relations of power that make a mockery out of equality, democratic participation and collective deliberation. En Guápiles, Limón, se realizará el debate una década después

Redacción (elpais.cr) – Una década después de los hechos, hoy se inicia el proceso en contra del dirigente sindical agrario Orlando Barrantes, en el Tribunal de Juicio del Segundo Circuito Judicial de la Zona Atlántica, Guápiles.

Barrantes es el Secretario General de CONATRAB (Consejo Nacional de Trabajadores Bananeros), organización que aglutina a miles de trabajadores y trabajadores bananeros que fueron expuestos al agroquímico Nemagón (DBCP) en las plantaciones durante la década de los años 70 y que han librado una dura lucha desde hace varios años en procura de justicia. Una serie extraordinaria de artículos, informes y presentaciones del influyente Instituto Reut de Israel ha identificado al movimiento global por la justicia, la igualdad y la paz con una “amenaza existencial” para Israel y ha pedido al gobierno israelí que emplee importantes recursos para “atacar” y posiblemente emprender un “sabotaje” criminal a este movimiento en lo que Reut cree son sus diferentes “centros” en Londres, Madrid, Toronto, la zona de la bahía de San Francisco y más allá.

El análisis del Instituto Reut mantiene que la doctrina estratégica tradicional de Israel (que considera las amenazas a la existencia del Estado en términos fundamentalmente militares, a las que hay que enfrentarse con una respuesta militar) está terriblemente desfasada. Mantiene que, en vez de ello, a lo que Israel se enfrenta hoy es a una amenaza combinada de una “Red de resistencia” y un “Red de deslegitimación” . Read the full story
