Benjamin Netanyahu has responded to the US request with a big concrete slap

Could the Israeli government make it any more obvious they have no intention of sharing the Over-Promised Land with its other inhabitants?

This week the Obama administration – who give Israel $3bn a year, more than they dole out to any other nation on earth – made a meek and craven request for Israelis to simply have a pause in seizing even more land, and to sit down with the Palestinians. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded with a big concrete slap: the announcement of 1,600 more homes to be built on occupied Palestinian land from which Arabs will be forcibly kept out. He has made it plain he will not loosen his grip by an inch, announcing: “Even if [Palestinian President] Abu Mazen comes along and says he’s ready to sign a peace deal on the spot, we will restore settlement construction to its previous levels.” No compromise. SILWAN, EAST JERUSALEM, Mar 16, 2010 (IPS) – Three thousand heavily armed Israeli security service forces locked down large parts of the Old City of Jerusalem on Tuesday, as battalions of police fired rounds of tear gas and rubber-coated steel bullets at Palestinian protesters in the occupied eastern part of the city. Nearly 40 Palestinians were wounded and treated at nearby hospitals, as 25 were arrested during intense clashes.

Protests were aimed at the Netanyahu administration’s announcement of expanded illegal settlement construction in East Jerusalem and the five-day closure of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and Palestinian institutions within the Old City. Fundamentalist settler groups held an opening ceremony for a synagogue constructed against the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, which was seen as a provocation to the Palestinian community in the area. An activist is a person who feels strongly about a cause and who is also willing to dedicate time and energy towards advancing and realizing this cause.

This might be my own limited interpretation of what activism means. I was born and raised in a Gaza refugee camp where the daily struggles of the community included challenging military occupation while attempting to survive under the harshest of circumstances. Activism then involved civil disobedience, general strikes, confronting armed Israeli soldiers with stones and slingshots. But it also involved much more than that. Read the full story

BAGDAD, 12 mar (IPS) – En el régimen de Saddam Hussein (1979-2003) las mujeres de Iraq tenían casi los mismos derechos que las de Occidente. La ley de Estatuto Personal, que entró en vigor el 14 de julio de 1958 cuando los iraquíes derrocaron la monarquía instalada por Gran Bretaña, otorgaba a las iraquíes la mayoría de los derechos de los que gozan las occidentales.

Al-Mabhouh has been callously deprived of his own relevance to the story.

The killing of Palestinian activist Mahmoud al-Mabhouh on January 19, 2010 was clearly a well-planned, violent and sadistic act, committed by Israeli assassins in the supposed safety of a sovereign country.

Yes, Mahmoud al-Mabhouh was a Palestinian activist. We have no reason to believe otherwise. He spent years of his life in Israeli prison – and one year in an Egyptian jail – for his political activism. This, however, gives no credibility to Israel’s accusation that al-Mabhouh was a killer of Israelis. This assertion becomes even more problematic when considering that al-Mabhouh’s assassination was, according to British media, ordered by accused Israeli war criminals and rightwing politicians. Con este argumento pretenden limitar el ejercicio del poder político, circunscribiéndolo a la acción en el marco de las instituciones estatales las cuales, como sabemos, se encuentran en México fuertemente corrompidas y enfrentando una aguda crisis de su legitimidad. El 8 de Marzo, Día de la Mujer Trabajadora, establecido por el Congreso Mundial de Mujeres Socialistas en el año 1910 a pedido de la dirigente socialista Clara Zetkin, es un día donde miles de mujeres –en todo el mundo- salimos a recordarle a la sociedad que el patriarcado y el capitalismo nos someten de diferentes formas: Convirtiendo a nuestros cuerpos en mercancía para la explotación sexual; dándonos trabajo precario y mal pago o esclavizándonos en las maquilas para sostener las riquezas del primer mundo; transformándonos en las más pobres entre los pobres; asesinándonos por nuestro género; sometiéndonos a todo tipo de violencia machista y misógina; condenándonos a abortos clandestinos e inseguros; imponiéndonos cánones de belleza que oprimen y enferman; sometiéndonos a un sistema hetero normativo que nos dice como debemos ser y a quienes podemos amar.
