Benjamin Netanyahu has responded to the US request with a big concrete slap

Could the Israeli government make it any more obvious they have no intention of sharing the Over-Promised Land with its other inhabitants?

This week the Obama administration – who give Israel $3bn a year, more than they dole out to any other nation on earth – made a meek and craven request for Israelis to simply have a pause in seizing even more land, and to sit down with the Palestinians. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded with a big concrete slap: the announcement of 1,600 more homes to be built on occupied Palestinian land from which Arabs will be forcibly kept out. He has made it plain he will not loosen his grip by an inch, announcing: “Even if [Palestinian President] Abu Mazen comes along and says he’s ready to sign a peace deal on the spot, we will restore settlement construction to its previous levels.” No compromise. Se reabrió la polémica por las Malvinas en un tema estratégico: la explotación petrolera. La noticia remite a inversiones inglesas en las islas argentinas usurpadas por el Reino Unido y la decisión del gobierno argentino por impedir el transporte de materiales asociados a dicha explotación. Esa medida gubernamental está sostenida en el incumpliendo inglés de acuerdos diplomáticos entre ambos países. Acuerdos que funcionaron entre 1995 y 2007 y reiteradamente incumplidos por las licitaciones de áreas petroleros habilitadas por Inglaterra en Malvinas.

Los trascendidos y declaraciones en cada país motivan las más diversas especulaciones, incluso guerreristas (al mejor estilo Thatcher en 1982) en el ambiente electoral británico, pero lo importante es la discusión sobre el uso soberano de los recursos naturales, un tema que trasciende la explotación de hidrocarburos y se proyecta a la explotación de la minería, de la tierra y su producción agrícola y ganadera, especialmente en tiempos de subas de los precios de la alimentación y deterioro de la capacidad de compra de los sectores de menores ingresos. Globalization is killing Europe, just as it’s already wiped out much of the American middle class.

Spain and Greece are facing immediate crises that many other European nations see on the near horizon: aging boomer workers are retiring with healthy benefit packages, but the younger workers who are paying for those benefits aren’t making anything close to the income (or, therefore, paying the taxes) that their parents did.

Globalists/corporatists/conservative “free market” and “flat earth” advocates say this is a great opportunity to cut benefits for the old folks (and for the young folks in the future), thus bringing the countries budgets back into balance, and this story is the main corporate media storyline. Proud Haiti has been reduced to a de facto “protectorate” of the United States — a grotesque form of non-sovereignty in which the subjugated nation is “protected” by its worst enemy. Namibia under white-ruled South African administration comes to mind, although in Haiti’s case the United Nations does not even pretend to be on the side of the oppressed, acting instead as agent and enforcer for the superpower. La activista saharaui Aminatu Haidar partió esta noche de la isla española de Lanzarote hacia el Sahara Occidental a bordo de un avión enviado por el gobierno español tras alcanzar un acuerdo con Marruecos para su regreso.

KABUL – The U.S. military has announced the opening of a new prison on Bagram Air Base. The prison, costing 60 million dollars, will hold up to 1,100 prisoners at any one time.

U.S. Brig. Gen. Mark Martins, a U.S. Army lawyer who undertook an examination this year of Afghan and American prisons, said that the prison would be handed over to the Afghan government, though it is unclear when that handover will take place.

Last week, reporters were taken on a tour of the facility, a dramatic move by the military, as no journalists – and few visitors of any kind – were allowed inside the old prison. The tour was part of a U.S. effort to show more transparency. Washington has been accused of a variety of human rights violations against Afghan detainees at Bagram. Read the full story
