Las corporaciones transnacionales e israelíes están directamente involucradas en la ocupación de Palestina. En una fusión de intereses políticos, geopolíticos y religiosos, la ocupación israelí de Cisjordania, Gaza y Altos del Golán está inspirada por intereses corporativos, donde las corporaciones de bienes raíces se benefician con la ocupación para obtener ventajas, desarrollan las colonias o asentamientos israelíes y participan en la construcción y operación de un sistema étnico de separación, idéntico al “apartheid”, incluyendo caminos con puestos de control y murallas. Nota de editor: Todos los días debemos mostrar nuestra solidaridad con el pueblo palestino y su causa de liberación. Las últimas tres semanas, desde el 15 de mayo por la conmemoración del Nakba (la Catástrofe de 1948 de la expulsión de los palestinos de sus tierras) hemos estado publicando cada día un artículo (o más), carta u otra obra que exprese nuestro apoyo, y con el cual podamos ayudarlos en su resistencia. Son profundas las raíces de la opresión, pero entre más seguido y más duro cavemos, ojalá lleguemos pronto a arrancarlas de las vidas que explota el estado israelí como expansión de su imperio (y por ende, el de los Estados Unidos). La muerte y destrucción siguen, pero también la resistencia, desde dentro del mismo estado israelí al otro lado del muro, hasta acá en Costa Rica.

En estos días, una acción de una agrupación de izquierda en denuncia a los crímenes del Estado de Israel fue presentada en los medios como una “agresión antisemita” o “antisionista”, como si ambos términos fueran sinónimos. Fue evidente la intención de los diarios y canales de TV de presentar a la izquierda en general como “antisemita” y violenta, sin la menor preocupación por contrastar la dudosa información que se filtró inicialmente. No puede aceptarse esta igualación, que muchos defensores de Israel pretenden imponer para silenciar cualquier crítica. La izquierda tiene una larga tradición de rechazo al sionismo y, al mismo tiempo, de defensa de los judíos contra toda discriminación. Israel is in the grip of a kind of collective schizophrenia. Not only its governors but the majority of its Jewish population have delusions of both grandeur and persecution, making for a distortion of reality and inconsistent behavior. Israeli Jews see and represent themselves as a chosen people and part of a superior Western civilization. They consider themselves more cerebral, reasonable, moral, and dynamic than Arabs and Muslims generally, and Palestinians in particular. At the same time they feel themselves to be the ultimate incarnation of the Jewish people’s unique suffering through the ages, still subject to constant insecurity and defenselessness in the face of ever-threatening extreme and unmerited punishment. The Hamas government in Gaza reached out to President Obama on the occasion of his visit to the Middle East, announcing that Hamas was willing to talk to all parties “on the basis of mutual respect and without preconditions.” CODEPINK cofounder Medea Benjamin, who carried the letter out from Gaza, said that the letter represented a significant development and an effort by Hamas to present a new face to the Western world. “While Osama bin Laden used the occasion of President Obama’s visit to deliver a scathing attack, Hamas reached out to a feminist U.S. peace group to deliver a letter to Obama urging dialogue, mutual respect and adherence to international law,” said Medea Benjamin. My land was once one where some people imagined that they could build their security on the insecurity of others. They claimed that their lighter skin and European origins gave them the right to dispossess those of a darker skin who lived in the land for thousands of years.
