La violencia contra las mujeres en la región latinoamericana es imparable. Las cifras, por miles, siguen manifestando un dato tras el cual el dolor, la mutilación, el asesinato, la ofensa y el conflicto de pareja minan la capacidad de respuesta de ellas a una vida libre y ciudadana y cobran en otras su propia vida.

Esta violencia, según el análisis de mujeres de 12 países, está cada vez más relacionada con el militarismo en la región, las secuelas de la guerra y los procesos de paz inconclusos. Con el desarrollo de un sistema feroz, cada vez más enfocado al consumo y la explotación, aumenta el número de asesinadas; aparece como grave problema la trata de mujeres y niñas y persiste la impunidad y la indiferencia social y gubernamental.

While BP has taken some heat over its spill in the Gulf, it is remarkable how limited the anger actually is. Many defenders of the company have made the obvious point: it was an accident. BP did not intend to have a massive spill that killed 11 people, devastated the Gulf ecosystem and threatens the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of workers.

Of course this is true, but it is also true that a drunk driver who runs into a school bus did not intend to be involved in a fatal collision. As a society, we have no problem holding the drunk driver responsible for a predictable outcome of their recklessness. Driving while drunk dramatically increases the risk of an accident.

Should you shut up about human rights abuses because they are happening far away, to people you don’t know, who have a different culture or color or creed? There is now a growing movement across the world saying that, yes, empathy should be cauterized at national borders. The world is carved into cultures, and they should not try to comment critically on each other. Instead, they should be “respectful.” You can criticize Your Own Kind, but not Foreigners, because they are unbridgeably different to you. This claim is now made by a strange coalition stretching from the Israeli government to African dictators to Western multiculturalists – and they are trying to give it the force of law.

A primary reason Bush and Cheney succeeded in their radical erosion of core liberties is because they focused their assault on non-citizens with foreign-sounding names, casting the appearance that none of what they were doing would ever affect the average American. There were several exceptions to that tactic — the due-process-free imprisonment of Americans Yaser Hamdi and Jose Padilla, the abuse of the “material witness” statute to detain American Muslims, the eavesdropping on Americans’ communications without warrants — but the vast bulk of the abuses were aimed at non-citizens. That is now clearly changing.

The most recent liberty-abridging, Terrorism-justified controversies have focused on diluting the legal rights of American citizens (in part because the rights of non-citizens are largely gone already and there are none left to attack). A bipartisan group from Congress sponsors legislation to strip Americans of their citizenship based on Terrorism accusations. Barack Obama claims the right to assassinate Americans far from any battlefield and with no due process of any kind.
