In the Niger Delta and the Ecuadorian Amazon, among other places, your emerging hell has been the living hell of local populations for decades. Despite the Santa Barbara oil spill of 1969 and the Exxon Valdez in 1989, Americans are only now starting to wake up to the fate that, for half a century, has befallen the Delta and the Amazon, both ecosystems at least as rich and varied as the Gulf of Mexico. Think of oil civilization in its late stages as a form of global terrorism.

While BP has taken some heat over its spill in the Gulf, it is remarkable how limited the anger actually is. Many defenders of the company have made the obvious point: it was an accident. BP did not intend to have a massive spill that killed 11 people, devastated the Gulf ecosystem and threatens the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of workers. Of course this is true, but it is also true that a drunk driver who runs into a school bus did not intend to be involved in a fatal collision. As a society, we have no problem holding the drunk driver responsible for a predictable outcome of their recklessness. Driving while drunk dramatically increases the risk of an accident.

Desgraciadamente, estos intentos han contado con el apoyo y la firma de algunos indígenas que lideran organizaciones como Asociaciones de Desarrollo Integral y CONAI.

El derrame de petróleo en el golfo de México pasará a la historia como uno de los peores desastres ambientales a escala mundial. Se habla de un accidente en la plataforma Deepwater Horizon, pero sería más adecuado hablar de negligencia criminal. El desastre se debe a la arrogancia corporativa y la ambición de los operadores de BP. Claro, también están involucrados la empresa Transocean, dueña y operadora de la plataforma (por cuenta de BP) y Halliburton, responsable de la cimentación del pozo. ¿Qué fue lo que pasó el 20 de abril?

The witch hunts against communists in the United States were used to silence socialists, anarchists, pacifists and all those who defied the abuses of capitalism. Those “anti-Red” actions were devastating blows to the political health of the country. The communists spoke the language of class war. They understood that Wall Street, along with corporations such as British Petroleum, is the enemy. They offered a broad social vision which allowed even the non-communist left to employ a vocabulary that made sense of the destructive impulses of capitalism. But once the Communist Party, along with other radical movements, was eradicated as a social and political force, once the liberal class took government-imposed loyalty oaths and collaborated in the witch hunts for phantom communist agents, we were robbed of the ability to make sense of our struggle. We became fearful, timid and ineffectual. We lost our voice and became part of the corporate structure we should have been dismantling.
