El “Maryam”, un barco de ayuda humanitaria cuya tripulación está integrada completamente por mujeres, se prepara para zarpar del puerto libanés de Trípoli y dirigirse a Gaza en las próximas semanas.

El navío, que intenta romper el cerco israelí sobre ese territorio costero palestino, llevará a unas 50 trabajadoras humanitarias, incluyendo a algunas monjas.

“A todos nos atrajo el proyecto, unidos por un sentimiento de (indignación contra la) descarada injusticia”, dijo Samar Hajj, una de las organizadoras del Maryam (versión árabe de “María”, la madre de Jesús de Nazaret).

By participating at such a high capacity in the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, with firm intentions of breaking the siege, Turkey was escalating its involvement well beyond Israel’s comfort zone. Therefore, Israel needed a decisive response that would send a message to Turkey — and any daring other — about crossing the line of what is and is not acceptable. It’s ironic how the neoconservatives’ “A Clean Break” envisaged an Israeli violation of the political and geographic boundaries of its neighbors, with the help of Turkey. Yet, 14 years later, it was Turkey, with representatives from 32 other countries, which came with a peaceful armada to breach what Israel perceived as its own political domain. The Israeli response, as bloody as it was, can only be understood within this larger context.

The Holocaust’s lesson for most Israelis is not a universal one that might inspire them to oppose racism, or fanatical dictators or the bullying herd mentality that can all too quickly grip nations, or even state-sponsored genocide.

Instead, Israelis have been taught to see in the Holocaust a different message: that the world is plagued by a unique and ineradicable hatred of Jews, and that the only safety for the Jewish people is to be found in the creation of a super-power Jewish state that answers to no one. Put bluntly, Israel’s motto is: only Jewish power can prevent Jewish victimhood.

Crecí junto al mar de Gaza. A lo largo de mi infancia nunca llegué a comprender muy bien cómo esa gigantesca masa de agua, que prometía una libertad infinita, podía también bordear una franja de tierra tan diminuta y abarrotada, una tierra a la que se mantenía eternamente secuestrada aunque en ella alentara una persistente rebeldía. Noticias de última hora en la televisión israelí anunciaron que un barco israelí había interceptado a unos terroristas palestinos cuando se dirigían en lanchas de goma hacia Israel. Les mataron o capturaron a todos, excepto a una lancha que podía estar dirigiéndose hacia el mar de Gaza.
