Israel presentó el pasado lunes al secretario general de Naciones Unidas, Ban Ki Moon, una actualización de sus investigaciones sobre la invasión de Gaza en diciembre de 2009 en la que murieron 1.400 palestinos, la mayoría civiles. Incluye la explicación israelí a un ataque del Ejército con fósforo blanco contra una sede de la ONU de Ayuda a los Refugiados Palestinos (UNRWA). Las conclusión es clara: pese a que las normas militares israelíes prohíben el uso de este armamento a la distancia que lo hizo en zonas con una densidad demográfica importante, se desestima la denuncia porque la operación era clave para proteger a sus soldados de una supuesta batería de misiles anti tanque que Hamás instaló en los alrededores.

Resistance is not a band of armed men hell-bent on wreaking havoc. It is not a cell of terrorists scheming ways to detonate buildings. True resistance is a culture. It is a collective retort to oppression. Understanding the real nature of resistance, however, is not easy. No newsbyte could be thorough enough to explain why people, as a people, resist. Even if such an arduous task was possible, the news might not want to convey it, as it would directly clash with mainstream interpretations of violence and non-violent resistance. The Afghanistan story must remain committed to the same language: al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Lebanon must be represented in terms of a menacing Iran-backed Hizbullah. Palestine’s Hamas must be forever shown as a militant group sworn to the destruction of the Jewish state. Any attempt at offering an alternative reading is tantamount to sympathizing with terrorists and justifying violence.

Cluster bombs are in the news again, thanks to a recent report from Amnesty International. The human rights agency has confirmed that 35 women and children were killed following the latest US attacks on an alleged al-Qaeda hideout in Yemen. Initially, there were attempts to bury the story, and Yemen officially denied that civilians were killed as a result of the December 17 attack on al-Majala in southern Yemen. However, it has been simply impossible to conceal what is now considered the largest loss of life in one single US attack in the country. If the civilian casualties were indeed a miscalculation on the part of the US military, there should no longer be any doubt about the fact that cluster munitions are far too dangerous a weapon to be utilized in war. Yet some countries still refuse to ban their production and use.

As Israel this week declared the “easing” of the four-year blockade of Gaza, an official explained the new guiding principle: “Civilian goods for civilian people.” The severe and apparently arbitrary restrictions on foodstuffs entering the enclave – coriander bad, cinnamon good – will finally end, we are told. Gaza’s 1.5 million inhabitants will have all the coriander they want. This “adjustment”, as the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu termed it, is aimed solely at damage limitation. With Israel responsible for killing nine civilians aboard a Gaza-bound aid flotilla three weeks ago, the world has finally begun to wonder what purpose the siege serves. Did those nine really need to die to stop coriander, chocolate and children’s toys from reaching Gaza? And, as Israel awaits other flotillas, will more need to be executed to enforce the policy?

En los medios de masas de EE.UU., ¿dónde encontraremos análisis equivalentes que sugieran que el temor de EE.UU. de un Irán con armas nucleares es “iranofóbico” y patológico, generado por narrativas culturales simbólicas y la “necesidad” de un enemigo en lugar de evaluaciones realistas de la realidad? Tenemos demasiadas pocas voces, incluso en los medios alternativos, que analicen la patología de EE.UU. respecto a Irán. No he visto ninguna en absoluto en la prensa dominante. Cuando la mayor potencia militar del mundo envía un portaaviones y casi una docena de buques de guerra para interceptar a dos barcos de carga que llevan alimentos, medicinas y ropas a civiles sitiados desesperados, algo está seriamente fuera de lugar.

A lo largo de mi infancia nunca llegué a comprender muy bien cómo esa gigantesca masa de agua, que prometía una libertad infinita, podía también bordear una franja de tierra tan diminuta y abarrotada, una tierra a la que se mantenía eternamente secuestrada aunque en ella alentara una persistente rebeldía. Noticias de última hora en la televisión israelí anunciaron que un barco israelí había interceptado a unos terroristas palestinos cuando se dirigían en lanchas de goma hacia Israel. Les mataron o capturaron a todos, excepto a una lancha que podía estar dirigiéndose hacia el mar de Gaza.

Iran's Green Movement is one year old this Sunday, the anniversary of its first massive demonstrations in the streets of Tehran. Greeted with great hope in much of the world, a year later it's weaker, the country is more repressive, and its hardliners are in a far stronger position -- and some of their success can be credited to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and sanctions hawks in the Obama administration. If, in the past year, those hardliners successfully faced down major challenges within Iranian society and abroad, it was only in part thanks to the regime's skill at repression and sidestepping international pressure. Above all, the ayatollahs benefited from Israeli intransigence and American hypocrisy on nuclear disarmament in the Middle East.

Su lucha diaria para alimentar a su familia desmiente las declaraciones realizadas esta semana por funcionarios israelíes en el sentido de que no hay crisis humanitaria en Gaza.
