The Cost of Oil: Life in Louisiana, and on Earth, Struggles to Survive

The Cost of Oil: Life in Louisiana, and on Earth, Struggles to Survive

On this anniversary of the largest accidental marine oil spill in history, attention here in south Louisiana is focused on the consequences of that traumatic event. As the Deepwater Horizon disaster begins to recede into history, we have heard wildly divergent views of what its effects have been for our region.

The Search for BP’s Oil

The Search for BP’s Oil

“Dolphins off the bow!”
I race to the front of the WeatherBird II, a research vessel owned by the University of South Florida. There they are, doing their sleek silvery thing, weaving between translucent waves, disappearing under the boat, reappearing in perfect formation on the other side.
After taking my fill of phone video [...]

On Precaution

On Precaution

Naomi gave the following talk at the first-ever TEDWomen conference on December 8, 2010, in Washington, DC. It includes a few of the slides that accompanied the talk.

I just did something I’ve never done before. I spent a week at sea on a research vessel. I’m not a scientist but I was [...]

Naomi Klein: Building a Real Left

Source: GRITtv
“We have to build that independent left. It has to be so strong and so radical and so militant and so powerful that it becomes irresistible.”

Katrina Pain Index 2010 New Orleans – Five Years Later

Katrina Pain Index 2010 New Orleans – Five Years Later

It will be five years since Katrina on August 29. The impact of Katrina is quite painful for regular people in the area. This article looks at what has happened since Katrina not from the perspective of the higher ups looking down from their offices but from the street level view of the people – a view which looks at the impact on the elderly, the renter, people of color, the disabled, the working and non-working poor. So, while one commentator may happily say that the median income in New Orleans has risen since Katrina, a street level perspective recognizes that is because large numbers of the poorest people have not been able to return.

Big Oil Makes War on the Earth

Big Oil Makes War on the Earth

If you live on the Gulf Coast, welcome to the real world of oil — and just know that you’re not alone. In the Niger Delta and the Ecuadorian Amazon, among other places, your emerging hell has been the living hell of local populations for decades. Despite the Santa Barbara oil spill of 1969 and the Exxon Valdez in 1989, Americans are only now starting to wake up to the fate that, for half a century, has befallen the Delta and the Amazon, both ecosystems at least as rich and varied as the Gulf of Mexico. Think of oil civilization in its late stages as a form of global terrorism.

Empire: Running on Empty?

What happens when the world runs out of oil? Who and what will be the dominant power in the 21st century?

The world is running out of oil.
Increasing global demand has outstripped supply.
The solution has been to search for oil in ever more remote regions of the world, requiring ever greater technological commitments, [...]
