El fiscal jefe del tribunal que pretende llevar el imperio de la ley al mundo está haciendo campaña activa para designar a EEUU –“el perpetrador y patrocinador de crímenes de guerra, crímenes contra la humanidad, y genocidio más prolífico del mundo”– como gendarme mundial. Y esto sin tener en cuenta el hecho de que EEUU no es, ni tiene intención de serlo, miembro del Tribunal Penal Internacional (ICC por sus siglas en inglés), ni está sujeto a su jurisdicción. Hablar y escribir sobre la protesta de los ex trabajadores azucareros del Ingenio San Antonio, propiedad de la Nicaragua Sugar Estates que integra el Grupo Pellas, se ha vuelto complicado, pero imprescindible. Una mezcla de angustia y profundo respeto se genera al pensar en las tristes condiciones en que viven, su historia de dolor y, al mismo tiempo, la capacidad de resistir 14 meses en la lucha, reivindicando sus derechos, desafiando lo indesafiable.

Centenares de ex trabajadores y viudas de la Asociación Nicaragüense de Afectados por Insuficiencia Renal Crónica (ANAIRC), afiliada a la UITA, han abandonado sus casas y sus familias. Algunos sus parcelas o los pequeños trabajos temporales que con dificultad habían conseguido pese a la enfermedad.

La insuficiencia renal crónica (IRC), que los debilita paulatinamente, día tras día, dejándolos, al final, antes de morir, como sacos vacíos y deformes. No me alcanza la imaginación para poder percibir y compartir el sentimiento de sus familiares, al momento de verlos exhalar el último suspiro, ante las largas horas de agonía y la fatiga de abandonar la vida.
