“There needs to be a new vision for Haiti, and that vision needs to come from the people,” says Marc-Arthur Fils-Aimé, director of the Karl Leveque Cultural Institute. Post-earthquake Haiti is often portrayed in the international media, by some international humanitarian organizations, and by the U.S. government as a nation of victims whose future depends on the largess of the international community. A more accurate portrayal is that a large and diverse social movement is highly mobilized to participate in rebuilding a country that won’t resemble Haiti as it was. The movement is continuing in the tradition of awareness-raising, organizing, and mobilizing that it commenced during slavery times, and which it has never ceased, even during the most brutal dictatorships. The core agenda has remained constant. With new post-earthquake particulars, it includes:

A pithy idea -- now going around in some progressive circles -- is that elections are a waste of time. The idea can be catchy. It all depends on some tacit assumptions. For instance: elections are a waste of time if you figure the U.S. government is so far gone that it can't get much worse. Elections are a waste of time if you've given up on grassroots organizing to sway voters before they cast ballots. Elections are a waste of time if you don't see much value in reducing -- even slightly -- the extent of injustice and deprivation imposed on vulnerable people. Or, if you see the organizing of protests, community groups, unions and the like as "either/or" in relation to working for the election of better candidates. Or, if you think the goal of those who struggled and suffered for the right to vote -- seeing the ballot as an essential component of democracy -- is outdated and rendered moot by present-day frustrations and outrages.

While it should never be the case that a high percentage of the Haitian population remains living in refugee camps seven months after the earthquake, still camp residents have managed to create in a few of those camps a small-scale model of the type of future society that many would like to see. This includes democratic participation by community members; autonomy from foreign authority; a focus on meeting the needs of all; dignified living conditions; respect for rights; creativity; and a commitment to gender equity. Con respecto a la Ley de Autonomía de los Pueblos Indígenas que se tramita en la Asamblea Legislativa es importante que se visualice desde la esencia misma de sus derechos la participación de toma de decisiones. El proyecto de la Ley de Autónoma, representa el marco jurídico que los pueblos indígenas necesitamos para mantener y fortalecer nuestra forma de vida que se ha construido a través de los siglos. Por lo tanto si el Proyecto de la Ley Autónoma tiene un dueño, este son los pueblos indígenas y sería una traición que nuestros líderes negocien (se pongan de acuerdo) en algo que ya los pueblos decidieron en consulta. ¡No es válido!

It makes accumulation the goal of life and caring a token of failure. But, another world is possible nearly everyone replies. Really, what is it? We want the world and we want it now. Yes, but kind of world do you prefer? Well, when I am asked that question about economics—and it is a good question about culture and kinship, and polity too—I answer, what I want is the fourth of four currently available options.

Todas las direcciones han sido revocadas y se inicia la autogestión bajo control obrero dela minería, empresas de explotación forestal y control ecológico, plantas siderurgicas y de aluminio con sus industrias de transformación.

En la apartada región de la Mosquitia, en el Caribe hondureño, un grupo de mujeres, la mayoría madres solteras, ancianas o viudas, comenzaron hace siete años a vencer el miedo y la timidez con un proyecto de reciclaje de basura que da sus primeros frutos.
