¿Qué somos como nación, si por anexarnos hemos traicionado el precepto primero de nuestra Constitución y masacramos a los esclavos modernos, migrantes, víctimas de la destrucción de sus naciones por la globalización imperialista y el enfrentamiento norte-sur?

“Artículo 1. En los Estados Unidos Mexicanos todo individuo gozará de las garantías que otorga esta Constitución, las cuales no podrán restringirse ni suspenderse, sino en los casos y con las condiciones que ella misma establece.

“Está prohibida la esclavitud en los Estados Unidos Mexicanos. Los esclavos del extranjero que entren al territorio nacional alcanzarán, por este solo hecho, su libertad y la protección de las leyes.

“Queda prohibida toda discriminación motivada por origen étnico o nacional, el género, la edad, las discapacidades, la condición social, las condiciones de salud, la religión, las opiniones, las preferencias, el estado civil o cualquier otra que atente contra la dignidad humana y tenga por objeto anular o menoscabar los derechos y libertades de las personas.” Read the full story

On the last night of August, the president used an Oval Office speech to boost a policy of perpetual war.

Hours later, the New York Times front page offered a credulous gloss for the end of “the seven-year American combat mission in Iraq.” The first sentence of the coverage described the speech as saying “that it is now time to turn to pressing problems at home.” The story went on to assert that Obama “used the moment to emphasize that he sees his primary job as addressing the weak economy and other domestic issues — and to make clear that he intends to begin disengaging from the war in Afghanistan next summer.”

But the speech gave no real indication of a shift in priorities from making war to creating jobs. And the oratory “made clear” only the repetition of vague vows to “begin” disengaging from the Afghanistan war next summer. In fact, top administration officials have been signaling that only token military withdrawals are apt to occur in mid-2011, and Obama said nothing to the contrary. Read the full story

La Policía Nacional hizo aparecer al trabajador de Bocas del Toro, Valentín Palacio, desaparecido como consecuencia de la represión desatada contra los sindicalistas bananeros en huelga a principios del pasado mes de julio. Según la Policía, el joven trabajador ngobe fue golpeado en Changuinola por un grupo de “maleantes” y amenazado de muerte. Durante un mes el paradero de Palacio fue un misterio a pesar de los múltiples habeas corpus interpuestos por familiares y organizaciones vinculadas a la defensa de los derechos humanos en Panamá. El Comite Permanente por la Defensa de los Derechos Humanos condena el aleve atentado ocurrido con un carro-bomba en la mañana del viernes, en la carrera 7a. con calle 67, que afectó a los poblados del sector, el comercio y la Cadena radial Caracol, entre otros.

Nos llama la atención que este atentado ocurra justo en los inicios del gobierno de Juan Manuel Santos, cuando se comienzan a normalizar las relaciones con Venezuela, cuando la Corte Constitucional estudia la inconstitucionalidad de las bases militares norteamericanas, los anuncios de la oposición de debatir la existencia de Fosas Comunes de dimensiones catastroficas y sobre todo, cuando sectores de la opinión sugieren la posibilidad de acercamientos para el dialogo y nuevos esfuerzos para una salida al conflicto. Bomba detonada en Nagasaki

El 6 de Agosto se cumplieron 65 años del ataque nuclear de Estados Unidos a la ciudad de Hiroshima, una monstruosidad si precedentes que, tres días después, se reiteraría al arrojar otra bomba atómica sobre la ciudad de Nagasaki. En un primer recuento ambas deflagraciones mataron a unas 220.000 personas, 140.000 en Hiroshima y 80.000 en Nagasaki. La abrumadora mayoría de las víctimas fueron civiles, dado que para ese entonces las dos ciudades no albergaban significativos contingentes militares. Aproximadamente la mitad falleció de inmediato, el mismo día de los bombardeos. En su edición de hoy al dar cuenta del nuevo aniversario el New York Times comenta que las víctimas instantáneas murieron a causa de la excepcional intensidad de la explosión que redujo la ciudad a cenizas y literalmente vaporizó sus cuerpos, dejando apenas espectrales huellas y sombras en las pocas paredes que quedaron en pie. Este último ataque se produce como continuación de los cinco días de ataques israelíes con misiles, disparos de cohetes palestinos y otras explosiones que han herido a docenas de personas y asesinado a un dirigente del ala armada de Hamas. Consider the following statement offered by Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, at a news conference last week.  He was discussing Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks as well as the person who has taken responsibility for the vast, still ongoing Afghan War document dump at that site. “Mr. Assange,” Mullen commented, “can say whatever he likes about the greater good he thinks he and his source are doing, but the truth is they might already have on their hands the blood of some young soldier or that of an Afghan family.” Read the full story

We write to alert you to the likelihood that Israel will attack Iran as early as this month. This would likely lead to a wider war.

Israel’s leaders would calculate that once the battle is joined, it will be politically untenable for you to give anything less than unstinting support to Israel, no matter how the war started, and that U.S. troops and weaponry would flow freely. Wider war could eventually result in destruction of the state of Israel.

This can be stopped, but only if you move quickly to pre-empt an Israeli attack by publicly condemning such a move before it happens. Read the full story

Blair’s will appear next month and earn him £4.6 million. Now, consider Britain’s Proceeds of Crime Act. Blair conspired in and executed an unprovoked war of aggression against a defenseless country, which the Nuremberg judges in 1946 described as the “paramount war crime.” This has caused, according to scholarly studies, the deaths of more than a million people, a figure that exceeds the Fordham University estimate of deaths in the Rwandan genocide. Anwar Aulaqi is a US citizen and Muslim cleric living somewhere in Yemen. The US has put him on our terrorist list and is trying to assassinate him. The Center for Constitutional Rights and the ACLU filed suit today so we can be pro bono lawyers for his father, Nasser Aulaqi, to stop the government from killing him.

We filed suit today to challenge the US requirement that lawyers must seek permission from the government before we can provide free pro bono legal representation to a US citizen.

This case will not decide whether the US can legally assassinate US citizens or anybody else. This case is about whether the government can deny pro bono lawyers to US citizens who the government accuses of being terrorists. Once we win the right to be lawyers for his father, we will challenge the constitutionality of the US efforts to kill him. Read the full story
