The Urgency of Housing, Part IV

“We’re mobilizing people in the camps and the shantytowns to let them know that getting housing is a right. Our vision is to make the problem of housing a focal point of people’s struggle,” said Reyneld Sanon of the Force for Reflection and Action on Housing (FRAKKA by its Creole acronym).

Grassroots groups in Haiti are developing strategies to respond to one of the greatest lingering crises of many after the January 12 earthquake: homelessness for 1.9 million people whose houses crumbled or were too damaged to occupy. FRAKKA represents one initiative, though still fledgling, to unite grassroots groups and residents of internally displaced people’s camps to win their human right to housing. Why are Israelis so indignant at the international outrage that has greeted their country’s lethal attack last week on a flotilla of civilian ships taking aid to Gaza?

Israelis have not responded in any of the ways we might have expected. There has been little soul-searching about the morality, let alone legality, of soldiers invading ships in international waters and killing civilians. In the main, Israelis have not been interested in asking tough questions of their political and military leaders about why the incident was handled so badly. And only a few commentators appear concerned about the diplomatic fall-out. Read the full story

A su llegada a la sede central de la Fundación de Ayuda Humanitaria IHH, organizadores del convoy atacado, el rabino Yisroel Dovid Weiss expresó a Rebelión su resuelta oposición a la existencia del estado de Israel y su determinación de trabajar para que los crímenes cometidos por éste no queden impunes. ISLAMABAD – On May 12th, the day after a U.S. drone strike killed 24 people in Pakistan’s North Waziristan, two men from the area agreed to tell us their perspective as eyewitnesses of previous drone strikes.

One is a journalist, Safdar Dawar, General Secretary of the Tribal Union of Journalists. Journalists are operating under very difficult circumstances in the area, pressured by both militant groups and the Pakistani government.  Six of his colleagues have been killed while reporting in North and South Waziristan. The other man, who asked us not to disclose his name, is from Miranshah city, the epicenter of North Waziristan.  He works with the locally based Waziristan Relief Agency, a group of people committed to helping the victims of drone attacks and military actions.  “If people need blood or medicine or have to go to Peshawar or some other hospital,” said the social worker, “I’m known for helping them. I also try to arrange funds and contributions.” Read the full story

En la región de Centroamérica, El Salvador, después de Guatemala, cuenta con una tasa de asesinatos de mujeres, de más de 10 por cada 100.000, seguidos por Honduras, Nicaragua, Panamá y Costa Rica, de acuerdo con datos de la Red feminista frente a la violencia contra las mujeres.

Según información del Instituto de Medicina Legal de El Salvador, la muerte violenta de mujeres se incrementó en diez años, al pasar de 195 casos en 1999 a 581 en 2009. En diez años han fallecido por esta causa un total de 3.578 y de enero a marzo de este año se tiene el reporte de 154 casos. Read the full story

La pedofilia, y otras iniquidades similares, ha desencadenado una crisis en la Iglesia, que no es una crisis temporal, que pueda ocultarse y olvidar, sino una crisis profunda de credibilidad, que puede durar muchas décadas para ser resuelta.

The US military has confirmed the authenticity of newly released video showing US forces indiscriminately firing on Iraqi civilians. On Monday, the website WikiLeaks.org posted footage taken from a US military helicopter in July 2007 as it killed twelve people and wounded two children. The dead included two employees of the Reuters news agency, photographer Namir Noor-Eldeen and driver Saeed Chmagh. We speak with WikiLeaks co-founder Julian Assange and Salon.com blogger Glenn Greenwald.

Aviones de combate y helicópteros artillados israelíes lanzaron al menos nueve ataques con misiles durante la madrugada de este viernes contra diversos puntos de Gaza, en una ofensiva organizada en represalia a un cohete artesanal palestino previo que impactó en territorio israelí. Los bombardeos han causado heridas a tres niñosy han dejado numerosos daños materiales.

Según testigos palestinos y dirigentes políticos locales, al menos cuatro misiles impactaron en zonas próximas al centro de la ciudad de Jan Yunis. Un quinto misil impactó contra una fábrica de queso de la ciudad de Gaza, en la que se declaró un incendio. Fue aquí donde los dos niños resultaron heridos por los cascotes que se desprendieron a consecuencia de las explosiones. If the U.S. public looked long and hard into a mirror reflecting the civilian atrocities that have occurred in Afghanistan, over the past ten months, we would see ourselves as people who have collaborated with and paid for war crimes committed against innocent civilians who meant us no harm.

Two reporters, Jerome Starkey (the Times UK), and David Lindorff, (Counterpunch), have persistently drawn attention to U.S. war crimes committed in Afghanistan. Makers of the film “Rethink Afghanistan” have steadily provided updates about the suffering endured by Afghan civilians. Here is a short list of atrocities that have occurred in the months since General McChrystal assumed his post in Afghanistan.

December 26th, 2009: US-led forces, (whether soldiers or “security contractors” (mercenaries) is still uncertain), raided a home in Kunar Province and pulled eight young men out of their beds, handcuffed them, and gunned them down execution-style. The Pentagon initially reported that the victims had been running a bomb factory, although distraught villagers were willing to swear that the victims, youngsters, aged 11 – 18, were just seven normal schoolboys and one shepherd boy. Following courageous reporting by Jerome Starkey, the U.S. military carried out its own investigation and on February 24th, 2010, issued an apology, attesting the boys’ innocence.
